NEW DATES! May 21-June 7: VIU rolls out Marine Operator Training Program Powell River

Work in the marine industry! The three-week Employment Skills Access Marine Operator Training Program kicks off at Vancouver Island University(VIU)’s Powell River campus on (new dates!) May 21, 2013, with one week of foundation training that will refresh the participant’s knowledge in communication skills, working with others (partners/ teams / leadership), computer skills, numeracy, and document use. The program ends on June 7, 2013.

The remainder of the program will focus on building awareness and receiving the necessary skills to meet the standards for gaining employment in the marine industry.
This program is being funded by the Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation’s Employment Skills Access (ESA) Program (see below for details on this program).

Tuition and materials are available for participants that meet the criteria of the ESA program. Funding for this training program will be administered by Vancouver Island University (VIU).
The participants will gain knowledge and skills that meet the standards as outlined by Transport Canada to work on, and operate a commercial vessel. Upon successful completion, students will receive certificates in the following:

  • Marine Basic First Aid
  • Red Cross Certificate Med A 3
  • Transport Canada Certificate Restricted Operator
  • Transport Canada Certificate Small Vessel Operator
  • Transport Canada Certificate

There are three intakes scheduled, and there is opportunity to apply individually, or run a complete program; in Powell River, BC the NEW dates of the program are: May 21– June 7, 2013.
This program has been selected to assist unemployed individuals gain employment and will cover all tuition and books for students that meet the eligibility criteria of the ESA program, namely the person must be  Unemployed and  cannot be on EI or have been attached to EI in the past three years for a regular claim or past five years for a Maternity/Parental claim.
